History

In Ohio’s earliest days as a state, much unrest was centered on where its capital should lie. Leaders moved the capital first from Chillicothe to Zanesville, and then back again. It was decided that a new capital, located at a middle point within the state, would be the best solution. Columbus was chosen in 1812 for its location and proximity to transportation routes. At that time, however, the city didn’t even exist. Instead, it was founded for this purpose and named in honor of Christopher Columbus. It was officially chartered as a city more than two decades later in 1834.

Columbus, Ohio is now the 15th largest city in the U.S. and boasts a diverse economy. It is home to the world's largest private research and development foundation; the world's largest clearinghouse of chemical information; and one of the largest universities in the country. U.S. Fortune 500 corporations based here include Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, American Electric Power, L Brands, Big Lots and Cardinal Health. And, for the fast-food junkies, Wendy's and White Castle are also based in the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area.
