Pet Grooming Tips for Summer

Help keep your pet cool in the summer heat! Pets are masters at keeping themselves cool as the weather heats up, but it doesn't mean they couldn't use a little help to stay comfortable! Depending on what type of pet you have, some additional grooming services may be necessary to keep your pet at the proper temperature. Our Columbus dog grooming team has some simple tips to help your pets thrive in the summer heat. Keep reading to learn more about pet grooming tips for summer.

Warmer weather usually means more time spent outdoors for your pet. The sun and heat can cause your pet to be uncomfortable outside, and some accommodations should be made to keep them comfortable. Outdoor safety requires you to provide your pet with plenty of shade, water, and even air conditioning whenever possible. Never leave your pet in a hot car or locked in a hot room. Even a few moments in a hot car could be dangerous for your pet. One way to prepare your pet for hotter temperatures is to provide grooming services that will lighten their coat and provide them with more ventilation.

Brushing your dog or cat daily will help to loosen fur and remove dead skin. This heavy fur tends to shed as the weather heats up, but it may get caught and matted on your pet as it starts to fall off. Brush your pet daily to help remove this excess fur and skin so that their coat can adjust to the weather accordingly. Cats like to spend time grooming and cooling themselves down, but a good brushing every day can really make a huge difference in their comfort and energy level. Dogs and cats that are not brushed often may actually develop skin infections from matting that collects bacteria. Matting in the fur is not only uncomfortable for your pet, but it also puts them at risk for more serious health issues. Protect your pet by brushing them every day to avoid skin irritations and coat issues.

Bath time is super important in the summer, just be sure not to over-bathe your pup! Our Columbus dog grooming team recommends that you bathe your pet about once every few weeks so that they can stay clean and comfortable without having their skin become dry or irritated. However, don't let your dog stay dirty just for the sake of keeping their baths infrequent. If your pet has found themselves covered in mud, dirt, or if they've been playing around in any bodies of water, give them a good scrub down. Dirt and lake water can contain bacteria that may lead your pet to become itchy and uncomfortable, so it's best to just wash them after they get messy.

Of course, some pets require haircuts in the summer time to stay cool and comfortable. Haircuts are only appropriate for some dogs with longer coats. Dogs with short coats should not get their hair trimmed because their minimal fur actually works to protect their skin from the sun. If you are unsure if your pet requires a haircut, call our Columbus dog grooming team to schedule a visit.
